Schizandra, Schizandra chinensis, is a shrubby vine native to China, Korea, the far east of Russia and Japan, which grows spontaneously in mid-mountain areas.
It is a climbing shrub appreciated for its decorative flowering but even more so for its red berries with recognized virtues, used ancestrally in Chinese and Tibetan herbology.
The berries have the evocative name of Red Chinese Berry with Five Flavors because they contain the 5 main flavors of typical Asian cuisine. The sweetness of its soft pulp contrasts with the sourness of its skin, the bitterness and spiciness released by its stone, and the salty aftertaste left by chewing its leaves.
A general tonic, shizandra has many properties, including maintaining the body's purification functions.

Schizandra* (Schisandra chinensis) fruit, tunic: gelling agent pullulan.
