Hops, Humulus lupulus, is a large perennial plant of the Cannabaceae family.
It is a dioecious plant: the female flowers and male flowers are on separate plants. It is the female flowers that produce the main active ingredients in hops.
Native to Europe and Asia, hops grow in hedgerows and on uncultivated land.
Traditionally, hops were mainly used by monks to make beer. However, other benefits of this plant were quickly discovered. For example, hop cones were placed in pillows to promote sleep.

Hop (Humulus lupulus) cone*, tunic: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose gelling agent.
