Description
For over 2,000 years, the roots of Panax plants have been valued in Chinese herbalism for their tonic, adaptogenic, and tonic properties. Due to its long history of use, Panax ginseng has been extensively studied by modern scientists and has been found to possess hundreds of compounds, including ginsenosides, phenolics, and saccharides, that contribute to its biological activity.
NOW Foods Panax Ginseng extract is said to have a wide range of therapeutic and pharmacological activities, which focus on immunological, anticancer, central nervous system, metabolic acceleration and antioxidant properties.
Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng ca meyer) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius l) are the two main species of ginseng. The main active ingredients of ginseng are a group of triterpene saponins 31 , also called ginsenosides. Ginsenosides can be classified into three groups based on the chemical structure of their sapogenins: the panaxatriol group comprising the groups re, rf, rg1, rg2, rh1, the panaxadiol group comprising the groups rb1, rb2, rb3, rc, rc, rd, rg3, rh2, rs1 and the oleanolic acid group comprising ro. However, six of them, rg1, re, rb1, rc, rb2 and rd, are the main ginsenosides accounting for more than 90 of the total saponin concentration. It has been observed that the ratio of individual ginsenosides may be an important factor in the pharmacological and therapeutic effects of ginseng extracts. For example, the panaxatriol group has an effect on memory improvement, while the panaxadiol group does not.
The typical source of ginsenosides is ginseng root, but current research has shown that ginseng leaf and ginseng berry are alternative sources of ginsenosides. The various total amounts, as well as the specific ginsenoside profile, vary depending on many variables. These variables include the species (e.g., American ginseng or Panax ginseng), the growing environment (wild or cultivated), soil and fertility conditions, the plant parts used, the age of the plant, and the extraction methods used.
