Garcinia gummi-gutta has many common names. It is most commonly called garcinia cambogia, but it is also called Malabar tamarind, Brindall's berry, or gambooge. In Sri Lanka, it is called "goraka." There are over 150 different species of garcinia.

Malabar tamarind is grown primarily in the humid forests of tropical Asia, in India and Indonesia, but also in West Africa and Polynesia. The plant has been used for over 4,000 years by Indians and is present in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.

The small tree that produces Brindall's berries is sometimes called a "guttier." This shrubby plant has glossy, simple, opposite, evergreen leaves that are dark green in color. Garcinia has drooping branches and orange to reddish flowers.

Discovery and uses of garcinia

The Brindall berry is a yellowish fruit that resembles a pumpkin because of its grooves, but is only about 5 cm in diameter. It is lobular and squashed. Its very thick skin is used primarily in herbal medicine for its hydroxycitric acid content.

Garcinia seeds are used to produce vegetable oil in some parts of the producing countries. The fruit peel is used as a seasoning in Indian and Thai cuisine, easily replacing tamarind as a condiment.

The benefits and virtues of garcinia were discovered in the West only recently. Its popularity began in the late 1960s, following extensive research on the plant. Garcinia-based dietary supplements then appeared in France in various forms.
