Description
Vitamin B-12 (cyanocobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for maintaining a healthy nervous system and producing energy from fats and proteins. * Vitamin B-12 is also essential for DNA synthesis during cell division and is therefore particularly important for the rapid multiplication of cells, such as blood cells. * In addition, adequate intake of vitamin B-12, folic acid, and vitamin B-6 is essential for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, thus contributing to a healthier cardiovascular system. * While B-12 is stored in the liver, dietary sources are only animal-based (meat and dairy products). Therefore, vitamin B-12 supplementation may be especially important for strict vegetarians.
From the FDA: "As part of a well-balanced diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, vitamin B12 may reduce the risk of vascular disease. The FDA has evaluated the above claim and found that, although diets low in calories, fat, and cholesterol are known to reduce the risk of heart disease and other vascular diseases, the evidence supporting the above claim is inconclusive."
