Hyaluronic acid belongs to the glycosaminoglycan family. It was first isolated in 1934 from the vitreous humor of a bull's eye. It has been identified in all vertebrate tissues. It is one of the essential elements of the extracellular matrix. It is present in greater or lesser concentrations depending on the region of the body. It is most often found in the dermis, eyes, and joints. A 60 kg human body contains approximately 12 g. With age, the synthesis and quality of hyaluronic acid decrease.
Its considerable size and helical configuration allow it to retain a large quantity of water and ions. Thus, it can attract and fix up to 1000 times its weight in water.
Hyaluronic acid also serves as an adhesion molecule to other support molecules such as collagen and elastin fibers.
