Ginkgo biloba, the tree with a thousand virtues
Straight from Asia, the ginkgo biloba is a tree symbolizing immortality. The ginkgo is a primitive tree that is extremely resistant to external elements. It protects itself from diseases and animals, but not only that. The ginkgo biloba is one of the only living species to have resisted the harmful effects caused by the atomic bomb. Also called the thousand crown tree, it has an astonishing longevity. The oldest specimen known to date is said to be 1,250 years old and is located in the Sendai Botanical Garden. It is the leaves of the ginkgo biloba that are primarily used.
Ginseng, the root of life
Panax ginseng is part of the Araliaceae botanical family. Its nickname, the root of life, comes from its anthropomorphic shape. Indeed, when the ginseng root matures, it takes on the form of a man. Cultivated for over two millennia in Asia, ginseng is consumed as a root vegetable. The difference between white and red ginseng lies in the production method. While the former is simply cleaned and then dried, the latter is steamed before final drying. Ginseng became popular in Western countries in the 18th century.
Echinacea, a flower with spice!
Echinacea purpurea is a wildflower that grows naturally in meadows and forests. This herbaceous plant gets its name from the thorny central disc of its flower. Echinacea is derived from the Greek word echino, meaning thorn. The plant is native to North America and now grows in many temperate countries. Archaeological excavations have revealed the use of purple coneflower by the Lakota Sioux. Echinacea's popularity exploded in both Europe and the United States in the 1930s. Echinacea root is the main ingredient used.
